Dear Lynne,

I am writing to let you know how pleased we are with our daughter Kelly’s progress since she began speech therapy with the Children’s Speech Care Center last fall.

As you know, Kelly is five years old and has a diagnosis of autism. She receives speech therapy for one hour, once a week. When therapy began, Kelly could speak fairly well but we had difficulty carrying on a conversation, relating a story and connecting her thoughts logically. We were also concerned about so-called “theory of mind” issues, i.e., Kelly’s ability to infer what another person might be thinking or feeling.

Although it has been only a few months since Kelly began seeing your speech therapist Tom Page, her progress has been striking. Kelly’s conversations with us are longer, and she holds up her end of the conversation with relevant questions and comments. Her train of thought is much easier to follow. She is now able to relate age-appropriate stories in logical sequence, and takes greater care to specify the time and place and make sure we understand who or what she is talking about. Her vocabulary about feelings has expanded, and she can more accurately speculate about the emotions a person or character in a given situation might be experiencing.

Also, Tom Page has been a pleasure to work with. He is young, enthusiastic and has established a great rapport with Kelly. He knowledge of speech therapy appears to be state-of-the-art.

We particularly appreciate Tom’s attentiveness to our goals and the care he takes to maintain consistency with the rest of Kelly’s program. For example, Tom had no trouble accommodating our request for a “floor time” style of therapy. Similarly, when Tom noted Kelly’s difficulty making eye contact, he asked us for our preferred approach.

Finally, we appreciate the way Tom sits down with us after each session to discuss any questions or concerns we may have, and to keep us abreast of Kelly’s progress. With this ongoing collaboration, we feel like active participants in our daughter’s speech therapy program, rather than mere chauffeurs.

Thank you again, Lynne, for the big difference speech therapy is making Kelly’s life and in our own.

Sincerely,

Carol and Dan
