Professional Biography
Charlene Martens attended Minot State University
(MSU) in Minot, North Dakota for the completion of both her Bachelor’s
and Master’s degrees in Communication Disorders.
Charlene has over three years of therapy
experience, working in a variety of settings with both children and adults.
Her primary experience is with toddlers with language delays and phonological
processing disorders. She also has had clinical experience with adults
with developmental disabilities and senior citizens.
In graduate school, she obtained clinical
experience in two external clinical practicum settings. The first was
in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District in Murrieta, CA, where
she obtained experience in the public school district working with groups
of children with a variety of needs including language processing, learning
disabilities, articulation, and individual sessions with children with
autism. The second external practicum experience was at St. Alexius Medical
Center in Bismarck, ND, where she worked in the Rehab unit in the hospital
with adults who were recovering from strokes, traumatic brain injury and
a variety of other etiologies. She also gained therapy experience working
with adults via the Telehealth network, where speech therapy was conducted
using the Internet, connected to hospitals in rural areas of North Dakota.
At the hospital, she also worked with children, including those with autism,
developmental delays and severe multiple handicaps.
Charlene’s interest areas in speech
therapy include Aural Rehabilitation, Augmentative and Alternative Communication
(AAC), working with adults and children with developmental disabilities
and phonological processing disorders.
