Irma graduated from San Jose State University in San Jose, California with a Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology from the University of the Philippines in Manila. During her studies, she was a member of the National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association. She is currently a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Prior to graduation, she completed two externships at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in San Mateo, California and at Spectrum Schools in Union City, California.

Irma has been practicing in the field since 2000. While attending graduate school, she was employed at the West Contra Costa Unified School District where she worked as a speech therapist with an emergency credential for four years. Prior to that, she was employed at Oakland Unified School District for a year. She worked with both elementary school and middle school aged children. Irma likewise practiced speech-language pathology in the Philippines in a variety of settings including, private schools, clinics, and home-based intervention.

Irma has extensive years of clinical experience with both children and adults. Most of her experience has been in the public school setting with children, ages 5-14. During this period, she provided assessments and treatment for children in regular education, special day classes, and non-severely handicapped classes. Her therapy emphasis has been in the areas of language and speech development, social-pragmatic skills, and voice in both individual and group treatment sessions.

Irma has been at Lynne Alba Speech Therapy, P.C. since January 2007. She has continued to work with a wide variety of children and adults. She sees children with such issues as autism, PDD-NOS, Down syndrome, language learning disability, and attention deficit, as well as children presenting with a variety of syndromes. The children she treats present with such communication deficits as speech and language delay, language processing deficits, expressive language formulation difficulties, social/pragmatic disorders, cognitive-linguistic deficits and a variety of speech production deficits. These speech issues include voice, articulation and phonology, apraxia, and dysfluency. The adult patients she sees present with communication disorders secondary to stroke, brain injury and other neurological deficits. She also sees adult patients with specific voice problems.

Irma has been trained in PROMPT, a specific therapy technique that utilizes tactile-kinesthetic cues and both direct and indirect manipulation of the structures used for speech production (e.g., lips, tongue, jaw) to help clients develop intelligible speech.

Irma is a highly motivated and enthusiastic clinician. She is creative and self-directed, and individualizes her sessions by adapting and/or making therapy materials which reflect the needs and interests of each patient. She has wonderful rapport with children and adults, alike, and enjoys working with families and other professionals who are involved her in patientsí lives to help with carryover of skills into the home, school and community.
